OPPORTUNITIES FROM OUR LAW FIRM PARTNERS

Class of 2022

PRO BONO SCHOLARS PROGRAM:

The Pro Bono Scholars Program provides top first year law students interested in law firm practice the opportunity to develop an early expertise in public interest law. The skills acquired during this program build a foundation for pro bono work and billable practice that will serve participants throughout their careers. The program spans two summers, with the Pro Bono Scholars working both at the firm and at a public interest organization during the first summer (as rising 2Ls). The next (rising third year) summer, the Pro Bono Scholars join the firm as participants in the firm’s general summer associate program. Candidates may apply to, and be considered by, only one Akin Gump office.

Applications should include a resume, transcript (uncertified is acceptable) and writing sample. Each candidate is also required to submit a short statement (no more than 500 words) describing how they believe a commitment to pro bono practice at Akin Gump, and the experience of being a Pro Bono Scholar, will help meet their career goals. The firm recognizes that first semester grades at some law schools are not released until early February; accordingly, we will accept applications with the transcript to be sent once it is released. The application process closes on February 3, 2020. Please click here for further information regarding the program and application process.

AKIN GUMP/ROBERT STRAUSS DIVERSITY & INCLUSION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

Continuing to build on the legacy of founding partner Robert Strauss, Akin Gump has long since recognized that a workforce of lawyers and staff from diverse social, racial, economic and cultural backgrounds is an important component of outstanding client service. We are pleased to offer the Akin Gump/Robert Strauss Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship as a program for first year law students.

The Strauss Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship is a two-summer program which provides a $25,000 scholarship to outstanding first year (1L) law students at accredited law schools in the United States to offset expenses for their second year of law school. Following their first-year of law school the Strauss Diversity & Inclusion Scholars first spend six weeks with the firm working on legal matters. They then spend at least four weeks at a firm client. The firm will place the Strauss Diversity & Inclusion Scholars directly with a firm client. During the second summer at the firm, the Strauss Diversity & Inclusion Scholars join Akin Gump’s Summer Associate Program in their selected offices. Candidates may apply to, and be considered by, only one Akin Gump office.

Applications should include a resume, transcript (uncertified is acceptable) and writing sample. Each candidate is also required to submit a short statement (no more than 500 words) describing the applicant’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, as well as academic and leadership achievements, why diversity and inclusion is important in the legal profession, and how the experience of being a Strauss Scholar will help meet their career goals. The firm recognizes that first semester grades at some law schools are not released until early February; accordingly, we will accept applications with the transcript to be sent once it is released. The application process closes on February 3, 2020. Please click here for further information regarding the program and application process.
